Peanut Butter and Banana Cookies for Dogs

Submitted By: Keri Cathey

Recipe:

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
2 ripe bananas
1/2 cup chunky peanut butter (approximately)
1 egg
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/4 cup dry powdered milk
1/4 cup canola oil (or other vegetable oil)
1 each Contents of 1 vitamin E capsule
--(optional - helps preserve freshness
and add anti-oxidants)
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup dry oatmeal
2 cups bread flour (VERY approximate)

Combine peeled bananas, peanut butter, egg, honey, water and baking soda in food processor (or mixing bowl). Blend well. Add baking powder, cinnamon, dry milk, oil, and vitamin E. Blend well again. Add whole wheat flour and oatmeal. Blend well again. Add bread flour a little at a time, blending after each addition, until it's the consistency of bread dough. Knead for a few minutes, or let the food processor zap it around for a while. (You could also make the dough in a bread machine and let it do the mixing and kneading, I suppose. Just be sure to use the dough cycle and don't let it bake in there.)

Let the dough rest under a bowl for about 15 minutes (makes it easier to roll out), then roll out to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick on a floured board or towel. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters or cut into small 1 or 2 inch squares by running a pizza-cutter across the dough. Re-roll scraps until all dough is used.

Preheat oven to 350. Spray cookie sheets with non-stick spray, place treats on sheets, and bake on middle rack in pre-heated oven at 350 for 30 minutes, until bottom of cookies are golden brown. Turn oven off and leave treats in oven for eight to twelve hours to harden. (Can be eaten by both dogs and humans after baking for 30 minutes, but they won't be hard. Hard treats help keep pupster's teeth clean and provide chewing enjoyment.)

Makes about five dozen or so, depending on size of cookie cutter.
